I now understand that I'll never truly realize Africa, all I can really do is sample it.
While this trip was large in a temporal sense, it was an infinitesimally small slice of a place so rich and whole. My journal attempted to capture a fraction of an experience that was a fraction of this true vastness.

Cairo
A brief stop in the desert - seventeen hours among the heat, crowds, and pyramids of Giza.
Masai Mara
The frame opened in the Mara. Distance became the subject: grass moving under the wind, animals appearing at its edge, and roads that seemed to dissolve into the horizon.
Zanzibar
A city state once part of the Portugese, Omani and now the Tanzanians, this small archipalego in the Indian Ocean felt like an ever pervading refuge from the rest of the continental mass.
Kilimanjaro
The mountain changed the unit of the journey. Days were no longer measured by places reached, but by breath, weather, and the steady repetition of one foot after the other.
